Gone baby, gone...

Right well this is pretty much a post about something that recently happened over the weekend. I'll just get right into the shtick , 1up.com and the fabled Electronic Gaming Monthly has gone the way of the dodo. This is a part geek-ish admiration of the two & also the general feelings I have about the print industry upon this two-strike blow.

1up.com ... well ... yeah as the EGM hit its late teenager years... It kinda lost track I guess? Well I kinda thought 1up.com took over.. I mean the podcasts hahah, there were some funny shit going with Shane & the rest. So yeah... this it you know, its hard to see such a tight community there torn up... The staff were great people ... Here below is a pic...

WeAreHere

What's going on? Well over in Gamespot.com a reviewer was fired for a "bad" review of a game called Kane & Lynch.. And these guys came out to bat for him for injustice to a fellow journalist.
Right, if you want to see people faced with real loss , over here. As to what happened? Here.

On to EGM... And this one is the one that hurts the most for me... Come on ... If you're not pissed off or the slightest clue what this magazine means & stands for then.. this post isn't for you. This mag... it was here back when the hardcore gaming crowd were the only gamers, not all these mainstream "look at me, I'm a gamer too with the Wii Sports/Skateboarde/Guitar Hero/whatever" hippies... Not knocking the games just the new mainstream crowd ... I mean... Yeah more gamers is good for buisness but when games start coming out to cater to them and not to the hardcore you know the gaming industry has changed so much since the days we all 1st Shorukyen's someone's ass..

Granted.. I know EGM on the last few years had a less spectacular run... but I think we all are still on WTF mode as to how easily the best gaming mag is gone when GamePro is still there.. I mean no offense, but EGM >>>>> GamePro... That and the staff... They had such a great Review staff .. plus you could generally tell these people working behind the print really did love their work..

Some of EGM high lights... Hmm Shen Long anyone heheh? Which actually went on to sorta becoming a character in the new SF 4 ... ... Hmm also I thought Shoe's interview with Peter Moore was legend too.. It wasn't the typical "polite and geeky" gaming journalist interview. There were some serious problems with the Xbox 360 & Shoe wanted to know what was going on... What happened to "Next Gen?" I mean as Penny Arcade put it.. It was a necessary step for the easy-going way of most gaming journalists.

I think I'll miss it most when it was just... Shoe.. Sushi-X .. Crispin.. and Shawn... Four man review crew and the mag was so damn fat too : )And now... really.. I don't ever expect any of the other mags to ever step up & try to become the new EGM..

And now well.. how this all hits home... In case you don't know.. I'm studying to become a journalist at the moment... And then this horror story comes along.. It makes you certainly question your career path.. I was probably too naive not to notice that ... print media is dying... Once again as with TRL, internet killed the magazine star... I mean 30 good people lost their jobs.. and they are probably better than what I can ever hope to try to acheive... And yet still... As Shoe puts it... "We know they’re talented people with great resumes from working there, so they should be back working 80-hour work weeks for some other website or magazine soon enough. We just hope this economy cooperates with that theory."

I mean your dad or mom would tell you go become a doctor or lawyer, you'll make guranteed big $$$ .. I always thought doing what you wanted was most important.. but I'm not sure if I can even get to do that 5 years from now... I mean not counting the whole 2012 stuff which hahah I bet all the tea in China is going to be just another boring night. I mean will the industry I aim for even be there after all this economic mess? I mean I know this doesn't just go for me.. but for DET & DMD peeps as well.. We are in the creative industry one way or another.. I mean it isn't set in stone whether we are even going to get a chance to do what we've been studied for so long.

I'll close with pretty awesome quote from Jenn ... "But this is what 1UP very literally means: you will always get to have one more life to play on, because you fucking earned it."
